Though your orb is lighter than a dream
'Tis a burden which consumes all my might
Upon the dusk my force of will sends it aloft
My teardrops, icy fire 'neath the bluish glow
I can think only of you, my cherished

To my strength this chore is nigh thought
But to see where you are forever silenced
Strains my heart more than I can bear
And it breaks even that much more

Each year since that tragic day
I raise the sun higher than 'tis worthy
I pray, my love, for one single moment
While foals frolic and ponies play
I adore them all and share their bliss
'Til with a single laugh, one tiny lapse
My guilt grows ever more ferocious
As I hoped, it rends my being to dust
For each joy not shared with you

Is there any worse pain I could suffer
Than having lost my sister, my dearest?
Neither the greatest scholars in a millennium
Nor the fleeting thoughts of the simplest fool
Will ever realize the terrible truth

The one thing that would surely destroy me
Is losing this precious soul-crushing agony
My constant reminder of how much I love you

Summary: While Princess Luna is imprisoned inside the moon, Princess Celestia laments her little sister's fate.

Disclaimer: I do not own the "My Little Pony" franchise or have any association whatsoever; I do not make any money for writing this story. Furthermore, if you know the back-story presented in the premiere then you may cry.

Unlike most siblings, Princess Celestia would not truly celebrate the anniversary of her sister's banishment.

Well, at some point in that millennium, she found a bit of hope.

She placed her bet, everything she had, on that hope. That chance for her sister.

That day when Luna came back to her must have been exhilarating.

Also, BlackGryph0n, you rock absolutely.

So maybe Princess Celestia disappeared from the town hall because she was crying so hard with joy and didn't want anyone to see her like that? ;) In any case, thanks for the thoughtful comment.

And yes, he does. :)

This is absolutly beautiful! Bitter-sweet and expertly written! (As I have come to expect from you.) What really caught me though, is the heart wrenching twist at the end! Celestia's selfless refusal to succumb to the easy path of acceptance, and her choice remain heartbroken at her sisters necessary, but dire fate!
How good she is, and how wise! Understanding that if she where to shun her pain, she could not rule with love and compassion. Such a cold mentality would turn her heart to stone. In the end, insecurity and bitterness towards her own narcissism would probably drive her to become the very thing that resulted in Luna's banishment. But pain born, power driven pride would never allow her to see this, and she would rule with a cold heart, and iron hoof!

Yet Princess Celestia has chosen pain. She has chosen integrity. Through selfless love, she maintains a balanced and beautiful perspective! Where the sweetness of freedom mixes with the bitterness of loss, and breeds empathy, compassion, and humility!

There are far to few people in the world like this today! So many simply follow their primitive instinct of self preservation. Selfless souls gave us Freedom, Time saw us take freedom for granted, and greedy expectation bred a race of entitleists...

If only we had such a ruler; if only we had Princess Celestia!...

Wow! And you claim that you can't write.* Your breakdown of possibilities for Celestia's reactions is both complete and actually sweet in itself. (Iron-hoofed still isn't though. ;)) I'm glad you got something good out of this, especially since this is the first time I've even considered writing real (non-parody) poetry... maybe ever.

The idea of the Summer Sun Festival as a celebration of Luna's defeat (even if that part was long forgotten) doesn't seem like something Celestia would do unless there was some other motive, and she's too kind to try hurting Luna any more. That's what inspired me to think she basically shortens the night, momentarily putting off a few more minutes of painful night only to make sure it reinforces her pain. I briefly wondered if the longest day was also to remind her why she had to imprison her sister, but Celestia wouldn't let herself off that easily.

I also commissioned a picture about Celestia's lingering pain that turned out very well. (See that version before looking at my rough layout.)

The problem with us ever having a leader like Celestia is that she's too humble and unobtrusive to go on TV and get into screaming matches. She is blessed with absolute power and more importantly, as you pointed out, humility. But I do have an original story idea of how we could enjoy some of that higher state. :shh:

* I think you have the passion and understand character types, influences. I still say that you're too good with visual arts, and again fanfiction gets a far smaller audience. It takes work to read, and I'm one of the worst because I'm a very slow and picky reader. Maybe comics would be the way to go, but with the extra challenge of telling a continuous story without any text. The day you are smitten with the idea, get a hold of Scott McCloud's book Making Comics, which gives a great overview of composition, layout, etc. Just beware that it's a massive amount of information shown in a medium-length paperback — mainly because there are so many pictorial examples to examine along with the explanations. I loved every page!

Thank you. I've never been into poetry in school they made it painful. Now even though I love Poe's work it's still tough. Yet thinking about how Celestia must have felt I was too inspired.

I also commissioned a sweet picture about how things are now: Princess Luna will never be alone again. (by ~C4tspajamas)

A swell consolation prize for Luna, but still nothing's changed for 1000 years.

Princess Luna could put some major guilt trips on her big sister, not to mention all of the birthday gifts she needs to catch up on now.
“You don't have time *sniffle* to read my 'Sailor Moon' fanfic? I *sniffle* understand. I'll just go back to my moon — er, I mean my room...”
